Tlaxiaco (english version)
Tlaxiaco is second
location at Casa Hogar for boys older than 14 years old. In 2003, Jony,
Danny’s brother, and his wife, Amber, moved to Tlaxiaco in the state of Oaxaca
with some of the teenage boys to begin a self-sustaining farm. Tlaxiaco is very
different from Huajuapan de León. As you can see in the photos below, Tlaxiaco
is very green and lush. There are fields upon fields, which is perfect for
growing crops. Huajuapan de León, on the other hand, is very dry, as you can
also see in the photos below. Tlaxiaco is right next to the mountains. When
Jony and Amber arrived in 2003, there was a house on the property to begin
with. Later, they proceeded to build rooms (similar the Casa Hogar) for the
boys to stay in.

Today, they
have animals, raise their own food, and teach several trades to the older boys,
including woodworking and other hands-on activities. Since Tlaxiaco is 2 hours
away from Casa Hogar, it would be very difficult to get food all the way to the Casa Hogar for each
meal. For this reason, they mainly only grow their own food. Only in special
cases do they provide food to the Casa Hogar (there is a market very near the
Casa Hogar where they get their food, which is funded by the church). The boys
at La Casa Hogar begin to be taught woodworking at a very young age. Alberto
and Danny are incredibly skilled woodworkers. As you can see in the photos
below, the boys are taught to make things like cabinets from a very young age,
and then grow these skills when they move to Tlaxiaco. These are photos of the cabinets
the boys made for the new kitchen at the Casa Hogar.
